The Beginning
Destiny Orphanage’s beginning is probably not something that you would expect. Pastors Mark and Beatrice Kitende had not set out to start an orphanage in Masaka. Nonetheless, it was something that was needed, and that God made a way for them to do.
In the midst of the quick paced ministry in Masaka, they challenged the community to provide bricks to build permanent structures for the churches that had been planted. A church leader had sent word saying that they had bricks to donate for the cause, and so to thank this leader for his contribution, the Kitende’s went to visit him. What they found had broken their hearts, and would change their lives. The Kitende’s found him living in a small grass hut that was falling apart, but his living condition was not the only thing that broke their hearts. Living with him were ten kids, not all his. The kind man had taken in these children because they were orphaned due to their parents dying of HIV/AIDS. Although he could have kept his bricks to construct a house for himself and the kids, this man insisted that the bricks belonged to God. Unable to get this man and his children to change their minds, Ps. Mark and Beatrice made arrangements to take in these kids.
Destiny Orphanage began as those ten kids living in a rented room with a loving widow from the local church who had a mother’s heart.
Currently…
The orphanage has grown as more lost and helpless children have come for help. Destiny Orphanage has grown out of the small, rented room they began in, and currently operates out of its own building with more staff that are willing to love and nurture these kids as they grow. What began as a mere ten kids has now grown to around 250 children that are being cared for and taught about their value in Christ.
